Critical Skills List Update: 39 New Designations Added

The list provides South African businesses with guidance on which foreigners qualify for critical skills work visas. Foreign nationals can get such visas only if they possess skills or qualifications that have been determined to be critical for South Africa.
The critical skills list for South Africa now includes nursing, which should help alleviate the significant nurse shortage in both public and private institutions around the nation.
The updated key skills list is timely given that private hospital groups expressed their dissatisfaction with the government for failing to address the nation’s growing nursing skills shortage.
The majority of the newly added skills are related to specialist medical and health professionals.
These professionals “diagnose, treat and prevent illness, disease, injury and other physical and mental impairments in people, employing specialised testing, diagnostic, medical, surgical, physical and psychiatric approaches,” according to the department’s definition.
